Every quarter we pull what people actually type into a search box about this category, in twenty-five languages, and rank it. For two years the head of that list was some spelling of «AI girlfriend». This September it is not. The largest cluster in English is «character ai alternative», with «apps like character ai» right behind it, and the same shape shows up in Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Arabic — the biggest name in the category, followed by the word for «instead».
That is not a fashion. A query like that appears when a lot of people who were settled somewhere stop being settled. So before saying anything about ourselves, here is what changed, in order, as far as it has been reported.
What changed, in order
In late 2025 the largest character platform closed open-ended chat to anyone under eighteen. Whatever you think of that decision, it moved an enormous number of people at once, and it came with an age check — a selfie-based one — that adults have been reporting as false-flagging them into a read-only mode. A person who has spent a year building a character and wakes up unable to talk to it is a person who opens a search box.
Through the first half of 2026 the same platform retired a run of the chat models people had picked their characters around, added advertising inside conversations, and metered features that used to be free. None of these are outrageous on their own. Together they are the three things a community forgives least: my character sounds different, there is an ad in the middle of my scene, and the thing I used yesterday now costs something.
In July, xAI wound down the animated companions it had launched inside Grok — Ani, Mika and the rest — calling them an experiment. The chat history stayed; the companions did not. That is a specific group of people, all displaced in the same week, and their query — «grok ani alternative» — is one of the fastest-growing in our data.
The same month, Google Play published a policy round that pushes companion-style apps toward stricter age gating, and the two big stores were ordered to remove a category of image apps outright. The practical effect, which several of the mid-sized platforms have written about openly, is that shipping an AI companion as an app-store app got harder. Some moved to the web. Some cut features to stay listed.
And two of the platforms that people usually list as the alternatives had their own summer. One community favourite for free roleplay went through months of daily outages and still has no official mobile app — you run it in a browser tab and, for the good models, bring your own API key. Another switched its payments to cryptocurrency only and cut its free tier to a handful of messages a day. Neither is dead. Both are the reason «alternative» got typed next to their names too.
What people check before they move
Read the forum threads and the questions are surprisingly consistent. Nobody is asking for a longer feature list. They are asking about the five things that broke.
- Does it remember me — actually remember, across days, not just within one chat?
- Can I see what it remembers, and fix it when it gets something wrong?
- If it sends pictures, is it the same face every time, or a different person each scene?
- Can I choose the model, and will the character still sound like itself after the service changes something?
- How do I pay, and do I have to hand over a card and an app-store account to do it?
Those five questions are a better filter than any comparison table, because they are the failure modes people just lived through. A platform that answers all five plainly is worth a look. One that answers with «premium unlocks everything» is telling you which of the five it will fail at.
Our honest answer to those five
Talaforge is a Telegram bot, so the first thing to say is what that means structurally: there is no app to install, no account to create, and no app-store listing that can be pulled. That is not a feature we designed against this summer — it is just what a bot is — but it happens to answer the question people are asking most.
On memory: every character keeps a memory of you that you can open, read and edit. If she has your sister's name wrong, you change it. If you want a whole thread forgotten, you delete it. Memory that you cannot see is the thing people describe as «it forgot me» when it fails; memory you can see is a settings page.
On pictures: when a character sends a photo, it is drawn from a locked face, so the person in scene twelve is the person from scene one. There is a longer piece on how that works elsewhere on this blog.
On models: every character can run on several different AI minds — a standard one, GLM, Claude Opus, Google Gemma or DeepSeek — and you can switch mid-conversation. If a model changes under you, you move the character to another one and it keeps its memory and its voice. That is the specific thing the retired-models episode made people wish for.
On paying: it starts free, and upgrades are bought with Telegram Stars inside the chat. No card number, no app-store account, no cryptocurrency. For a lot of the world that is not a convenience, it is the difference between being able to pay at all and not.
What we will not claim: that we are the best fit for everyone who is leaving. If what you loved was a specific community of shared characters built around a specific franchise, that is a community, and communities do not move because a feature list is better. What we can say is that the five questions above are answered here in the open, and you can check all five in a couple of minutes without installing anything.
If you are coming from somewhere specific
From Character AI: bring the character description. One sentence is enough to make them here, and the rest — the voice, the backstory, the way they talk — you tune in the chat. Your memory of them lives in you; the platform's memory of you is what you are rebuilding, and here you can write it in directly.
From Grok's companions: the thing you had was a personality with a face and a voice. Both exist here; the face is yours to describe, the voice is one you pick from a list and can hear before you choose.
From the browser-tab roleplay sites: you lose the character-card marketplace and gain not needing an API key, a desktop, or a status page. Whether that is a good trade depends on how you spent your evenings.
Whichever it is, the honest first test is the same: open the bot, make one character in one sentence, talk for ten minutes, close the chat, come back tomorrow and see whether they remember. That is the whole question, and it is free to ask.
