AI roleplay in Turkey, 2026: Character.AI's fifth-largest market pays for it in a currency that will not sit still

Turkey sends Character.AI more traffic than almost any country on earth, almost entirely from phones, from the youngest AI audience in Europe. It also blocks platforms overnight and reprices every foreign subscription when the exchange rate moves. What that does to the market, and where a Telegram bot fits.

AI roleplay in Turkey, 2026: Character.AI's fifth-largest market pays for it in a currency that will not sit still

Open Semrush's country breakdown for character.ai and Turkey is fifth worldwide: 4.59% of all visits in July 2026, around eight million a month, 96% from a phone. On the short c.ai domain it is third, at 7.18% and 99% mobile. A country of 88 million out-visiting Germany, Japan and Britain on the biggest character-chat site in the world.

So we went looking: who Turkish users talk to, what they type into Google, how they pay, and what the state does to their platforms. Every number below comes from a page we opened; where we could not verify something, we say so.

The youngest AI audience in Europe, on the smallest screens

Turkey's statistics office published its first individual-level AI figures in October 2025: 19.2% of people aged 16 to 74 had used generative AI in the year; among 16-to-24-year-olds, 39.4%, double the national rate, four in five for personal reasons. DataReportal's Digital 2026 report adds 77.5 million internet users, 88% penetration, a median age of 33.5, and 82 million mobile connections for 88 million people.

Put that next to the Semrush device split and you have the market's shape: young, mobile-only, already comfortable talking to a model for its own sake. A Turkish user opens a character between two messages, not on a laptop. This is not a market you reach with a website.

What Turkish search asks for, and what it does not

We walked Google's Turkish autocomplete through the phrases people use. First lesson: the English category word does not exist in Turkish. «Yapay zeka rol yapma» (AI roleplay) completes to one phrase, «rol yapma oyunu», a game. The vocabulary is «sevgili» and «sohbet»: lover, chat.

Three wants: a Turkish-speaking lover, free, on a phone; the Character.AI from before it asked people's age; and reassurance that it will still be reachable tomorrow. The last two are Turkey's own.

The age wall, in a country where the audience is nineteen

On 29 October 2025 Character.AI announced it would remove open-ended chat for under-18s by 25 November, with an in-house age model plus a third-party identity check. In a market where the 16-to-24 cohort uses AI at twice the national rate, that is why «character ai eski sürüm apk» tops the autocomplete: a slice of Turkey's eight million monthly visits was told to leave, and went looking for the old build.

We are not that exit either. Talaforge's public surfaces are all-ages; anything beyond flirting sits behind an age confirmation inside the bot, with limits that do not move. If the search was for a way around the age wall, this article is not the answer.

The currency problem: why a foreign subscription hurts here

Turkey is a high-inflation market where the App Store repriced its storefront again on 17 November 2025, citing exchange rates and tax. In June 2026 the Turkish App Store tier for ChatGPT Plus doubled in one step, after the currency's slide had left it around half the American price. When a rumour spread that Spotify would move Turkey to foreign-currency billing, the company had to publicly deny it.

That is the reality behind every companion app selling a monthly plan in Turkey: the plan was priced somewhere else, in someone else's currency, and the user learns what it costs this month when the card is charged. It is why «ücretsiz» is glued to every phrase.

Telegram Stars is the path that never leaves the phone. Telegram's documentation says digital goods inside bots are sold exclusively in Stars, bought through ordinary Apple or Google in-app purchase, @PremiumBot, or Fragment. In practice: a Turkish card, the Turkish storefront, no foreign merchant, no subscription to cancel; «telegram stars satın alma» is already a Turkish autocomplete phrase. We are not the only ones who noticed: at least one competitor already sells Turkish-speaking companions through a Telegram bot for Stars, and its Turkish blog says plainly «we are a Telegram nation». They are right, and we are late to a party they helped throw.

The BTK record: why «will it be reachable tomorrow» is a real question

Turkey's regulator blocks platforms outright, and 2024 was the year it did so at scale. Instagram was cut off on 2 August 2024 and restored nine days later after talks with Meta. Roblox was blocked on 7 August 2024 on a court order citing child safety; whether it reopened in June 2026 is disputed between Turkish outlets and official records, so we will not call it. Discord was blocked on 9 October 2024 and remained so through 2025.

Above the blocks sits throttling. Human Rights Watch documents a 42-hour slowdown of X, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Telegram in March 2025 during the Istanbul protests, and 21 more hours in September 2025 that also hit WhatsApp and Signal. Article 60/10 of the electronic communications law lets the presidency order a restriction without a court for up to 72 hours. OONI's March measurements show Telegram's web client blocked while the mobile app stayed reachable.

Telegram is not immune; it was on the September list. But a service at a URL vanishes the moment its domain is listed, and a bot inside an app 88 million people already have installed does not. Character.AI has not been blocked in Turkey as of this writing; the «erişim engeli mi geldi» searches are fear, not fact. Rational fear.

Who Turkish users actually talk to

Character.AI dominates without a Turkish interface: its app ships in nine languages and Turkish is not one, though characters answer in Turkish when spoken to. Talkie, PolyBuzz and Chai autocomplete in Turkey with «apk». Two Turkish-localised companions show up under «yapay zeka sevgili»: Fanchaty, a web app selling Turkish-first characters, and HoneyChat, a Telegram bot with a Turkish blog and Stars payments. Replika barely registers.

Where they beat us: Character.AI's catalogue is thousands of times larger and its community is why people arrive; the native apps have polish a bot cannot match; HoneyChat is already on Telegram with the same payment logic. Where we win here:

The ten-minute test

Do it on a phone, on mobile data, in the evening, where this market lives. Open @talaforge_bot, pick Türkçe, and describe a character in one Turkish sentence: a name, a city, one habit. Talk for five minutes in Turkish and watch for the two failures reported elsewhere: drifting into English, and stiff, translated Turkish. Ask her for a photo. Close Telegram and come back tomorrow: if she remembers the habit and the face is the same, you have run the test. If you needed an app store, a card or a URL, you did not.

Is Character.AI blocked in Turkey?
Not as of September 2026. Instagram (nine days in August 2024), Roblox (since August 2024) and Discord (since October 2024) were blocked by the BTK; Character.AI has not been. The «erişim engeli mi geldi» searches reflect the record, not a decision.
Does Character.AI support Turkish?
Characters answer in Turkish, but the interface ships in nine languages and Turkish is not among them. Talaforge's interface and characters run in Turkish as one of 36 languages, switchable mid-chat inside Telegram.
Can I pay for an AI character without a foreign card?
Yes. Talaforge starts free and upgrades are Telegram Stars, bought through the ordinary in-app purchase on the Turkish storefront, through @PremiumBot or on Fragment. No subscription, no foreign merchant, nothing priced in another currency on your statement.
Is there an AI girlfriend app in Turkish that is free?
«Yapay zeka sevgili ücretsiz» is the most-typed version of the query. Talaforge starts free with no card; Turkish-localised competitors such as HoneyChat and Fanchaty also offer a free tier. Character.AI is free with an optional plan, but without a Turkish interface.
Is Talaforge a way around Character.AI's age verification?
No. Public surfaces are all-ages; adult roleplay sits behind an age confirmation inside the bot and its limits do not move. If the search was for the old Character.AI build, we are the wrong answer and say so.
Why a Telegram bot and not an app in Turkey specifically?
Because the two things Turkish users search for most, after «free» and «Turkish», are whether the thing will be reachable tomorrow and what it will cost this month. A bot inside an app 88 million people already have, paid in Stars, answers both without a download.
