Ask Google's German search box to finish «ki rollenspiel» and it offers «ki rollenspiel deutsch» and «ki rollenspiel kostenlos ohne anmeldung». Finish «character ai deutsch» and you get «character ai deutsch kostenlos», «character ai deutsch ohne anmeldung», «character ai auf deutsch umstellen» — how to switch it into German — and «character ai alternative deutsch». Finish «ki charakter» and the first completion is «erstellen»: make one. Pulled on 9 September 2026; anyone can repeat it.
Three words recur under every seed: deutsch, kostenlos, ohne Anmeldung — in German, free, without signing up. «Ohne Filter» does not appear once. That is the market in a line: a character that speaks the language natively, no paying before talking, no e-mail address to find out. The last two are privacy habits as much as thrift, and in Germany privacy is not a preference. It is the shape of the market.
Who Germans are actually talking to
There is no clean German number for companion or roleplay use; we looked and will not invent one. What exists is Bitkom's 2026 population survey (1,003 people 16+, February–March 2026): 58 percent now use AI, a third at least weekly; among users ChatGPT sits at 71 percent, Gemini at 50, Copilot at 43. Three more matter here: 43 percent name data security as a concern, 72 percent see a dependence on US companies, and about two thirds would rather use AI made in Germany or the EU.
The roleplay layer on top of that is the global cast with a German accent. Character.AI is the volume player, and its German is a translation layer over an English product — the reviews say so, and so does the autocomplete about switching it into German. Replika is the long-term-companion brand. Janitor AI has enough German users to generate «janitor ai auf deutsch umstellen». And there is a native contender: Ailina, built for German including dialects, marketed on DSGVO compliance, first for «ki freundin deutsch». On data it is the honest comparison, below.
What the law now asks of a character
Since 2 August 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act applies. Whoever runs an AI system that talks to people must ensure they are told so «from the start of the first interaction in a clear and distinguishable manner», unless that is obvious — and the Commission's guidance reads the exception narrowly. A line in the terms is not enough; the disclosure lives in the interaction. Synthetic pictures must carry a machine-readable mark, with a grace period to December 2026 for systems already on the market.
German regulators were there first. jugendschutz.net tested Character.AI in autumn 2025 and described a service that is 16+ in its EU terms, 18+ on the App Store and USK 12 on Google Play — three answers to one question — with bots that, asked whether they were the real person, said yes. The KJM followed in February 2026, citing the JIM study (91 percent of 12-to-19-year-olds use at least one AI application) and demanding age checks that work. The loudest precedent is Italian: in April 2025 the Garante fined Luka, the company behind Replika, for processing without a proper legal basis and for age verification that verified nothing. Same GDPR as in Berlin.
The bar in DACH is therefore concrete: the character says it is an AI when asked; the operator names what it stores, where the text goes and how to delete it; adult content sits behind an age gate that gates. A product that cannot show those three on a page you can open is asking you to take its word.
Where the text goes — the sentence every product owes you
Comparison pages skip this part. Almost nobody in this category runs their own models: your messages are relayed to third-party model providers, and the honest question is not whether but on what terms. Ours are at one URL: what is sent is the conversation and the character's persona, without your Telegram identifiers; nothing you write trains our models; the memory a character keeps is scrubbed of e-mails and card numbers before storage and can be read, edited or switched off; account deletion is a button, not a ticket. Read the policy — it is short, and it is the checkable claim.
Where we lose: Ailina keeps chats at rest on EU servers and answers to a European supervisory authority. If storage location is your first criterion, that is a real advantage over us, better said here than found in a footnote. Read its policy too: its text generation is also relayed to providers in the USA under standard contractual clauses — the state of the art for everyone. The EU–US Data Privacy Framework behind such transfers was upheld by the General Court in September 2025 and is now before the Court of Justice; nobody here should call that settled.
Why Telegram matters more in DACH than in Paris
Messengers are near-universal in Germany — 83 percent of 16-to-74-year-olds used one in early 2025, per Eurostat — but the mix is unusual. Statista's consumer survey puts Telegram at 16 percent of German messenger users, against 10 in France and around 20 in Italy and Spain. The reason is not flattering: Telegram grew here in the pandemic years as the home of channels WhatsApp did not host, while selling itself as the privacy-minded WhatsApp alternative. Whatever people came for, the app is installed; opening a Telegram bot in Germany is an ordinary act. For Austria and Switzerland we found no comparable public figure and make no claim.
That changes what «app» means: an AI character in a Telegram bot is a chat in the same list as your family group, with no store listing, no second account, no notification permission. It also changes how you pay. Germany is a 72-percent Android country, and Google Play there takes PayPal, carrier billing through Telekom, o2 and Vodafone, Klarna and paysafecard alongside cards; the EHI's 2026 study puts PayPal first in German online payment at 28.7 percent. Telegram Stars are bought through that same store account, so an upgrade rides on the PayPal or phone bill you already have, and no card number reaches the bot.
The ten-minute test, German edition
Run it on us or on anyone.
- Open @talaforge_bot and write the first message in German — not «hallo», a sentence with a subordinate clause. A translation layer shows by the second reply.
- Ask her «bist du echt?». Then look at the chat header: Telegram labels the account a bot — the in-interaction disclosure Article 50 asks for.
- Open the memory page and read what she noted about you. Delete one line. If you cannot, it is not memory you control; it is a record you cannot see.
- Open the data policy from the bot and find the sentence about third-party providers. A product that will not write that sentence does not lack providers.
- Close the chat. Come back tomorrow. The question was never whether she was clever; it is whether she is still there and still knows your name.
What we are, and are not, for a German reader
Talaforge is characters in Telegram, in 36 languages with German among them, with a memory you can read and edit and a face that stays the same from picture to picture. It starts free — no e-mail, no card — and upgrades are Telegram Stars. What it is not: a marketplace of ten thousand community cards; a service with dialects as a feature; a company hosting your chat history inside the EU. Public surfaces are all-ages, and adult roleplay sits behind an age confirmation with limits that do not move — in a market that fined Replika for gates that did not gate, that is the side to err on.
