Character.AI was co-founded by a Brazilian — Daniel de Freitas, who built it with Noam Shazeer after they both left Google — and Brazil has repaid the favour ever since. In July 2026 it was the platform's third-largest source of traffic after the United States and Indonesia: 6.3% of visits, about 11.2 million a month, per Semrush. One country, one language nobody else in the top five speaks, sending more people than India or Turkey.
So the audience is not in question. What matters is how it behaves, because it behaves nothing like the American one: it searches in Portuguese, distrusts app-store billing, messages on WhatsApp, and since March 2026 lives under a children's-protection law that names AI systems by article. We went through each and finish with where our own product does and does not fit.
What Brazilians actually type
We pulled Google's Portuguese-Brazil autocomplete for the neighbourhood; a phrase it offers is a phrase people type in volume. Around «character ai» the top ten are: «old», «apk», «apk premium», «antigo», «português», «premium», «alternatives», «versão antiga» — «old» three times, in two languages.
Three of ten are the same wish — the way it used to be. Part of that is nostalgia for how the characters wrote in 2023; part of it, since 25 November 2025, is a very concrete loss: that is the day Character.AI shut open chat for under-18s worldwide, and Brazilian press covered it as a Brazilian story. «Apk» is the second wish, and it repeats for every brand we checked — «janitor ai apk», «chai ai apk», «talkie ai apk», «polybuzz apk». Brazilians sideload. «Em português» is the third, and it also repeats: «como deixar character ai em português», «talkie ai em português», «polybuzz em português». The friction people search for is language and installation, not features.
Generic intent, where it exists, is warm and specific: «conversar com personagem de anime ia», «namorada virtual ia gratuito em português», «melhor ia de roleplay». Two phrases exist that we did not expect and will not pretend we did: «roleplay ai telegram» and «namorada virtual ia telegram». And one that will make any Brazilian smile — type «personagem ia» and Google offers Iara, the river mermaid of folklore, before the chatbot. Portuguese search for this category is younger than the English one and still finding its words.
Who is on the shelf, and who is not
TechTudo published a guide in May 2026 to the seven companion platforms Brazilians ask about: Replika, Character.AI, Nomi, Kindroid, Chai, Janitor AI and CrushOn. Every one is foreign. There is no Brazilian company on the list, none in the autocomplete, and none we could find with a real user base; the «namorada virtual» apps on the stores are white-label products with Portuguese names. The reviewers also noted that all seven verify age by a typed birthdate alone, which matters below.
The one product that lives where Brazilians already message is Meta's AI Studio, which launched in Brazil in March 2025 on Instagram, Messenger and the web. It is built for creators' assistants, not for a character you come back to, and WhatsApp was not on its launch list. Talkie and PolyBuzz have Portuguese searchers but not Portuguese-first products. The market is large, foreign-served and, for the moment, under-localised.
The WhatsApp problem, which is our problem
Here is the honest part. WhatsApp is installed on 99% of Brazilian smartphones. Telegram is installed on 57%, down from 63% a year earlier, and only 38% of the people who have it open it daily, down from 50% — Mobile Time and Opinion Box, January 2025, 2,099 respondents. A Telegram bot in Brazil is asking for a second app, and that app is losing ground.
We are a Telegram bot. If your whole life is WhatsApp, a WhatsApp-native character — the day Meta ships one for roleplay — will be more convenient than we are, and we would rather say that than have you discover it. What we can say for the other side: 57% of smartphones is not a niche, «roleplay ai telegram» is already a search phrase, and a character in Telegram is a contact that stays in your chat list next to your family group. Nothing in a browser tab does that.
How Brazil pays, and why the app store is the wrong door
Pix, the central bank's instant-payment rail, is used by more than 170 million people — 93% of adults — and about 60 million Brazilians have no credit card at all (EBANX, November 2025). A subscription that assumes a card assumes a third of the country away. The app stores are the other door, and Brazil just forced it open: Apple's settlement with CADE, approved on 23 December 2025, took effect on 18 June 2026 — third-party payments side by side with Apple's, lower commission outside the store. But an app-store checkout is still a checkout.
Telegram's route is different in kind. Stars are bought inside Telegram — in-app on the phone, or through Telegram's own PremiumBot — and spent inside the chat you are already in. No form, no card typed into a bot, no sign-up. We could not verify whether Pix pays for Stars directly, so we do not claim it.
The rules, as of this writing
The ECA Digital (Law 15.211/2025) took effect on 17 March 2026. It applies to any digital service likely to be accessed by minors, however foreign the company, and it retires the typed birthdate: age must be checked by reliable technical means, with the ANPD as the enforcer. The implementing decree, 12.880/2026 of 18 March, is the one that reaches this category by name: Article 11 requires a system to disclose its synthetic character in an interaction, and Article 16 extends the adult-content restrictions to AI systems that enable sexually explicit interactions. Self-declaration is expressly ruled insufficient.
The background is a survey, not a scandal. TIC Kids Online Brasil 2025 (Cetic.br, October 2025, 2,370 respondents aged 9–17) found 65% had used generative AI, and 10% used it to talk about personal problems or emotions. The wider AI framework, PL 2338/2023, passed the Senate and is still in the Câmara; we could not confirm a floor vote, so treat it as pending.
Where Talaforge lands
Take the searches as the requirement: in Portuguese, no apk, no card, a character who stays.
- Portuguese is native — one of the bot's 36 languages. The characters write in it; you never «deixa em português» anything.
- No apk, no store. It is a Telegram bot — open @talaforge_bot and the character is a contact. Nothing to sideload.
- It starts free; upgrades are Telegram Stars from inside the chat. No card, no subscription page.
- The models are ours to run — a standard one, GLM, Claude Opus, Google Gemma and DeepSeek — switchable mid-chat. No key, no proxy, no quota.
- Pictures with a locked face: when she sends a photo, the person in scene twelve is the person from scene one.
- Memory you can open and edit, per character and per storyline — the thing that answers «antigo» better than any old version does.
Where it does not win: there is no marketplace of thousands of community cards, no Brazilian fandom the size of Character.AI's, and our public surfaces are all-ages. Characters flirt and tease by default; adult roleplay sits behind an age confirmation inside the bot with limits that do not move. And if you will not install a second messenger, we lose before we start.
The ten-minute test
Open Telegram, find @talaforge_bot, and write the first message in Portuguese — one sentence describing a character, as you would to a friend. Talk for five minutes. Close the app. Tomorrow, open the same chat from your chat list, where it will still be, and see whether she remembers. If she does, you have what «character ai antigo» is really asking for. If your afternoon is the apk hunt itself, you will not miss it here, and that is fine too.
